PART FORTY FIVE
Sura 26 - "The Poets"
David E. Flang
Mohammad begins by writing about the
confrontation that Moses and Aaron had with Pharaoh concerning the children
of Israel. Allah sent them to Pharaoh with signs to prove that "we are
messengers of the Lord [Allah] of the Worlds--". When Moses threw down his
rod, it became a serpent and it "swallowed up the cheating wonders" of Pharoh's
magicians."Then the magicians threw themselves down in worship: They said
"We believe on the Lord [Allah] of the Worlds." Pharaoh threatens his
magicians with death for this rebellion and they reply that Pharaoh cannot
harm them because "Assuredly we trust that our Lord [Allah] will forgive us
our sins, since we are of the first to believe."
Pharaoh allows the children of Israel
to leave Egypt and what he had given them, "gardens and fountains, And
treasures and splendid dwellings;" But he changes his mind and pursues them
and traps them at the sea. Allah tells Moses to "Strike thy sea with thy
rod.", the sea is parted, the children of Israel escape and the Egyptians
are drowned.
Mohammad writes that despite the
signs from Allah, the children of Israel continued to worship idols. "And
Hell shall lay open for those who have gone astray [Jews and Christians],
And it shall be said to them, Where are they whom ye worship Beside God
[Allah]?" The lost in hell confess their error, blame the wicked for their
plight and if given another opportunity would become believers. Mohammad
concludes "Fear God [Allah] then and obey me [Mohammad]."
